Top Dem Candidates: We will Get Troops Out Sometime Before 2013

If you caught the debates last week then the following is sure to resonate with you…

(WASHINGTON) — The leading Democrat presidential candidates joined forces this week to immediately call for the eventual pull out of U.S. forces from Iraq on a time line that could have all of the troops home as early as the end of the second term of the president who succeeds the next one. “We cannot let one more brave American patriot die while refereeing a meaningless foreign civil war,” said Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-NY. “As I’ve said before, if George Bush won’t bring the troops home now, when I’m president, I will.

Of course, by then ‘now’ will have passed and what ‘nTopow’ will mean then is hard to tell now. It depends on what the meaning of ‘now’ is.”

Sen. Barack Obama said, “This war never should have started, that’s why I voted against it in the first place. Now that it’s under way, I have called for the president to bring the troops home. However, it would be irresponsible of me to say whether, as president, I would bring the troops home before 2012, because things look different when one is commander in chief. At this time, as a senator running for president, I think it’s irresponsible for Bush to leave the troops in Iraq, but that could change the day I take office by virtue of the office I take and through no fault of my own.”

Former Sen. John Edwards apologized again for voting in favor of the war, but added that he’ll “never, never, never apologize” for calling for a troop pullout today.

“What seems like the right thing to do now, is the right the thing to do,” said Mr. Edwards, “I know that I’m not wrong about this like I was wrong about voting for the war. So, I’m confident that this president should bring our troops home now. However, I cannot make commitments on behalf of a future commander in chief who might turn out to be me.”

In a joint news release, the three Democrat rivals said, “We know the troops can’t come home now, or anytime in the near future, but that doesn’t mean we should stop calling on the president to do that which none of us would do if we were sitting in his chair right now.” — as reported by satirist Scott Ott / ScrappleFace

Scott Ott may have been on top of his satire writing the above piece, but it only brushes the surface of the hostility that many on the liberal left are feeling towards the top three candidates of their party just about now.  For all their rhetoric of the last six months, each one is beginning to back pedal from their previous positions. Who knows, maybe Kucinich may turn out to be the MoveOn.Org candidate of choice…  What a hoot that would be !!

Queer Eyes in Iran

(2007-09-25) — Producers of the new BravoTV series “Queer Eye for the Iranian Guy” said they’re close to inking a deal with Islamic Republic President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to appear in the season opener.

While it’s a well-known fact that there are no homosexuals in Iran, the network plans to import them to Tehran from the United States in order to give Mr. Ahmadinejad “a radical, extremist makeover.”

During the course of the show, the Iranian leader will be “fundamentally transformed head-to-toe” by a group of homosexual men known as the Fab Five — an interior designer, a fashion stylist, a chef, a beauty guru and a ‘concierge of cool’.

According to a news release from the show’s producers, “By the time the Fab Five are done with him, the A-man will have gone from geek to gorgeous, sporting new threads, new taste in pop music and a new sense of self-identity.” — as reported by satirist Scott Ott / ScrapleFace

Ahmadinejad: Holocaust? What Holocaust?

So how is today’s speech playing in Peoria … er… Mecca ?? Here is an excerpt from Al-Jazeera which appears to have a fairly balanced accounting. There is no doubt however that the speech given at Columbia University today will be picked apart and used to further Ahmadinejad’s agenda both within Iran and in the Middle East in general. The platform provided his a level of legitimacy that he could not refuse. What’s next Columbia… an invitation to Hugo Chavez ???

Holocaust denial

Ahmadinejad rejected accusations that he has denied the Holocaust actually happened, but argued for more research to be conducted on the subject.
“I’m not saying that it didn’t happen at all,” he said. “I said, granted this happened, what does it have to do with the Palestinian people?”He used his 30-minute speech to repeat Tehran’s insistence that its nuclear programme was focused on meeting the country’s electricity needs.

Washington says Iran is seeking to produce nuclear weapons.

“We do not believe in nuclear weapons. Period. This goes against the whole grain of humanity,” Ahmadinejad said.

During the question-and-answer session he denied that homosexuals were persecuted in Iran.

“In Iran we do don’t have homosexuals like in your country. In Iran we do not have this phenomenon. I do not know who has told you we have it,” he said, sparking laughter from the audience.

Some, however, were not amused:

“This is a sick joke,” said Scott Long of Human Rights Watch, saying Iran tortures gays under a penal code that punishes homosexuality between men with the death penalty.

US targets Iran force

Separately, Condoleezza Rice, the US secretary of state, ratcheted up the pressure on Tehran, telling the Reuters news agency that the US was considering sanctions against the entire al-Quds force of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard. Such a designation would enable Washington to target the force’s financing. The US accuses the Quds force of inciting violence in Iraq and of training and equipping fighters who have attacked US troops. Iran has repeatedly denied this. The US is increasing diplomatic pressure on Iran to stop uranium enrichment, which can produce nuclear weapons, and targeting the al-Quds force would be part of that strategy. “Remember that the problem with the Quds force is that it has a network of activities in support of terrorism but it also, we believe, has a network of activities in support of proliferation,” Rice said.— Excerpt from Al-Jazeera More….

The pressure can be turned up on Iran without military action. Regime change from within may still be possible but if we flat out attack the Iranian people whatever hope there would be for an internal regime change would be lost. There are voices that say that we would be welcomed with open arms… sorry… been there, done that. It’s doubtful that the Imams of Iran will ever allow a return to a more secular society within Iran.

MoveOn.Org to Pay NY Times $77K

MoveOn.Org has now decided to pay the $77K difference in ad fees and calls on former Mayor Guiliani to do the same… Here is the press release… from PR and US Newswire services…

Statement by Eli Pariser, MoveOn.org Political Action Executive Director, Resolving the New York Times Ad Rate Issue

(WASHINGTON, Sept. 23 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/) — In the Public Editor
column of today’s New York Times, the Times’ vice president admits that, without the knowledge or consent of MoveOn.org Political Action, the Times”made a mistake” in charging MoveOn its standby rate of $65,000 for the advertisement run on Monday September 10. According to the Public Editor, the Times’ vice president admitted that the company’s advertising representative “failed to make it clear that for that rate the Times could not guarantee the Monday placement but left MoveOn.org with the understanding that the ad would run then.” According to the Public Editor, “the group should have paid $142,083.”
Now that the Times has revealed this mistake for the first time, and while we believe that the $142,083 figure is above the market rate paid by most organizations, out of an abundance of caution we have decided to pay that rate for this ad. We will therefore wire the $77,083 difference to the Times tomorrow (Monday, September 24, 2007). We call on Mayor Giuliani, who received exactly the same ad deal for the same price, to pay the corrected fee also. The Public Editor’s column makes crystal clear that at no time did MoveOn have any reason to believe that it was receiving from the Times anything other than the normal and usual charge for the advertisement. And
there is no evidence of any kind that the error in quoting of rates was in any way based on the content of the advertisement or the identity of its sponsor. Of course, MoveOn believed that it was engaged in an arms length negotiation regarding advertising rates with the Times and assumed that it was being quoted advertising prices consistent with the Times’ usual and normal charge.
MoveOn continues, of course, to stand by the content of the advertisement and to urge citizens and their elected representatives in the Congress to focus on the continued dishonesty of the Bush Administration and the American blood and treasure being lost in a war for which the Administration has no exit strategy. Certainly that issue is more worthy of the attention of the electorate and the media than the mistake of an advertising representative or the wording of an advertisement.

There has been a rumor that NY Times executives may be having lunch with President I’ma-Jihad of Iran that has been unconfirmed. We wonder if in fact the funding for that lunch might be paid for by some of this MoveOn money?

Iran Shows Off New Missile – Thumbs Nose at Israel and U.S.

More rhetoric to inflame the west on the eve of President I’ma-jihad’s trip to the U.N. on Monday. Any predictions on a full scale war with Iran before the 2008 election?

(TEHRAN) …The head of Iran’s elite Revolutionary Guards, Mohammad Jaafari, warned bluntly: “My message to the enemy is that they will regret it (an attack). Do not do it.”

The Ghadr missile, which has a “baby bottle” style nose for extra aerodynamic efficiency, is seen as an improved version of Iran’s existing longer-range Shahab series, which was also paraded.

Officials have said in the past that the Shahab-3 could reach 2,000 kilometres (1,250 miles), but the announcer said it had a 1,300-kilometre (800-mile) range.

The parade today was marked by a litany of slogans calling for “Death to America” and “Death to Israel.” Western military attaches, apparently warned of this in advance, boycotted the rally for the second year running.

“The Western attaches did not come. It was because of the slogans about Israel and the United States,” said one foreign representative who declined to be named.

“Israel should be eliminated” and “No Iranian Muslim, no Muslim recognises Israel,” were among the slogans borne on the back of military vehicles, quoting the words of Iran’s revolutionary founder Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini.

“Israel has to be wiped off the map,” read another Khomeini quote which aroused worldwide controversy when it was repeated by President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in 2005.

The parade came amid growing tensions over Iran’s nuclear programme, which the United States alleges is cover for a nuclear weapons drive but which Tehran insists is aimed solely at producing electricity. — Associated Foreign Press – Stuart Williams More…

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad meanwhile said in a speech that warnings of military action and further UN sanctions would have no effect on Tehran’s nuclear drive.

“Those who think that with outmoded instruments like psychological warfare and economic sanctions they can stop Iran’s march towards progress are making a grave mistake,” Ahmadinejad said.

President I’ma-jihad is also to deliver a speech at Columbia University, address the Christian and Jewish leaders, and meet with a number of American Muslim leaders (probably CAIR) during his visit to New York.

It really is time for the U.S. to ask the world to find another home for the U.N. — ZZ
