Political News, Reviews, Satire and Sarcasm... With a Libertarian Slant You Sort Out!

Visiting Brazil

We are on the road this week, traveling in Brazil on business. Currently posting this article from Sao Paulo, a wonderful city filled with wonderful people. Our ability to post may be rather limited but we will make an effort as opportunities present themselves.

For those of you that are active on Digg and have been offering your objective feedback on our posts and editorials, I wanted to let you know we are planning something special for all of you. All the Digg "Mutual Friends", who are associated with one of our editors, ugotz2 (DIGG user name) will be able to participate. We are working on a special cross posting feed at our sister site, SpyGlass Chronicle, that will give YOUR Digg articles some extra site exposure for other to read and Digg (or not Digg)!

Just a small gift to all our mutual friends out there who often DIGG articles here on ZardozZ News and Satire. It’s the least we can do to help share and expand site exposure for like minded readers and authors… :)

More about this when I return…

In the meantime, I would be interested if there are any of ugotz2’s Digg Mutual Friends out there that would be interested in submitting articles here on ZardozZ News and Satire? If there is enough interest we will consider selecting a few contributing writers/editors and allow them posting access directly to this site if they have an interest in active blogging and getting some additional Digg promotion here.

Ciao…
ZZ

Top Dems May Be Starting to Flip on Iraq War

Here it is folks. Straight from that bastion of intellectual accuracy, the New York Times. Contributing reporters Jeff Zeleny and Christine Hauser seem to have observed a change in the political winds as campaigning Democrats are beginning to sense they may have painted themselves into a corner if the situation in Iraq continues to improve the way it has been.

The flipping will be fast a furious when the polls begin to show that moderate Americans are supporting the idea to see this through in order to establish a defensive and at least quasi-democratic presence in Iraq for strategic military and national security reasons…

Hillary photo op with troops in Iraq – Preparing for the inevitable flip…

As violence declines in Baghdad, the leading Democratic presidential candidates are undertaking a new and challenging balancing act on Iraq: acknowledging that success, trying to shift the focus to the lack of political progress there, and highlighting more domestic concerns like health care and the economy.Advisers to Senators Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama say that the candidates have watched security conditions improve after the troop escalation in Iraq and concluded that it would be folly not to acknowledge those gains. At the same time, they are arguing that American casualties are still too high, that a quick withdrawal is the only way to end the war and that the so-called surge in additional troops has not paid off in political progress in Iraq.

But the changing situation suggests for the first time that the politics of the war could shift in the general election next year, particularly if the gains continue. While the Democratic candidates are continuing to assail the war — a popular position with many of the party’s primary voters — they run the risk that Republicans will use those critiques to attack the party’s nominee in the election as defeatist and lacking faith in the American military.

If security continues to improve, President Bush could become less of a drag on his party, too, and Republicans may have an easier time zeroing in on other issues, such as how the Democrats have proposed raising taxes in difficult economic times… — J. Zeleny and C. Hauser – New York Times

The flip-flopping was as predictable as the sun rising in the east each morning. The speed in which the surge has made a difference in civil stability was not. Much to the dismay of campaigning Democrats. But should the leading democrats begin to flip now this early in the campaign? The answer of course is NO. That’s why they are trapped. There is no way they can take the risk of alienating their power base on the radical left before the primary process points to a clear winner and nominee. At that point the posturing and backpedaling will begin. They will want to be associated with the “winners”. Everyone loves a winner. Their cover will be a “the situation has changed as we know have a better understanding of the strategic situation on the ground.” Political double speak for having to re-assess previous political positions.

Hillary of course will have no trouble back peddling whatsoever, since she is so clearly unclear in almost all of her positions anyway. After all, she did vote to go to war with Iraq in the first place and she will begin to make the case that she has all along been the only “responsible” candidate for not abandoning the military effort as radically as her running mates. Hence the photo ops above… She’s very slick, that slick Hillary.

Australia: Bush Supporter Defeated as Prime Minister

The New York Times is clearly thrilled at the defeat of John Howard in Australia: Bush Ally Defeated in Australia. Presumably a harbinger of things to come for the Republican party.

John Howard concedes defeat

(SYDNEY, Australia, Nov. 24) – Australia’s prime minister, John Howard, one of President Bush’s staunchest allies in Asia, suffered a comprehensive defeat at the hands of the electorate on Saturday, as his Liberal Party-led coalition lost its majority in Parliament. He will be replaced by Kevin Rudd, the Labor Party leader and a former diplomat. “Today Australia looks to the future,” Mr. Rudd told a cheering crowd in his home state of Queensland. “Today the Australian people have decided that we as a nation will move forward.” Mr. Howard’s defeat, after 11 years in power, follows that of José María Aznar of Spain, who also backed the United States-led invasion of Iraq, and political setbacks for Tony Blair of Britain.

Here are just a few select comments from readers over at LGF (Little Green Football), a politically conservative blog, that speaks to the notoiously biased perspectives of the Times that just about sums it up…

Pathetic, but what else is new?

#2 bald headed geek 11/24/07 11:04:56
Defector1 is exactly right. If a world leader was pro-American, then the NY Times hated him/her. A defeat for America or its policies is always a good thing, in the Times’ opinion.BHG

#3 JammieWearingFool 11/24/07 11:06:56 am
ABC radio was kvelling over this and celebrating that they’re going to pull their troops and sign on to the Kyoto scam.

#4 X-ray 11/24/07 11:07:02 am
They should know all about defeat. They are rooting for it in Iraq and displaying it in ad revenue at home.

…. More at LGF

Why should anyone be surprised at the reaction over at the Times? As X-Ray indicated they know all about defeat. They relish any opportunity or any event that even remotely diminishes the global influence of the U.S. in any way regardless of its impact.

Bush Applauds Hillary Clinton’s Experience

You have got to hand it to Scott Ott he really knows his “seasoned prime beef”…

(WASHINGTON) — President George Bush told ABC News anchor Charlie Gibson this week that Sen. Hillary Clinton’s White House and Senate experience make her the Democrat candidate best prepared to face the Republican presidential nominee in 2008.

“In the White House, First Lady Clinton worked side-by-side with Vice President Al Gore, who I defeated in 2000,” said Mr. Bush, “In the Senate, she served alongside John Kerry and John Edwards, who I defeated in 2004. No one else in the race has such broad-ranging experience with what it means to be a Democrat presidential candidate in the 21st century.”

The president noted that “the very fact that Sen. Clinton is now debating with rookie Sen. Barack Obama over who has more experience serving in an executive position, which neither senator has ever done, further demonstrates that among Democrats she’s seasoned, prime beef. As my friends in the ranching business say, ‘It’s what’s for dinner’.” — as reported by political satirist Scott Ott / ScrappleFace

Experience? We don’t need no stinking experience!!

Rudy Defends Obama’s Drug Use Revelation

We suspect a pre-emptive strike is underway by Barack Obama. Rumors that Hillary’s camp found some skeletons in Obama’s closet were circulating over the net all weekend. Then, lo and behold, Obama speaks about his high school years of drug and alcohol experimentation. Coincidence? We think not.

Smart move Obama… best to come clean. That’s a whole lot more than you can expect from the Clintons that’s for sure!! Bravo — at least you have some guts to be honest. But we wonder if the “leak” did not occur whether you would have been just as forthcoming. And Rudy’s no dummy either. Get those skeleton’s out there now so they are old news by next Novemeber. Was the rumored story real or a dirty trick? You be the judge…

(CHICAGO) – Rudy Giuliani declared that Americans should not expect a “pretense of perfection” from candidates running for office and says he respects Barack Obama’s “honesty” for discussing his previous drug use with a group of high schoolers today. The Illinois Senator is receiving criticism from Mitt Romney, among others, for opening up and discussing past mistakes during a town hall at a Manchester, NH High School Tuesday. “I made some bad decisions that I’ve written about, there were times when I got into drinking and experimented with drugs.. there was a whole stretch of time when i didn’t really apply myself a lot,” Obama told the group. Giuliani said he believes Obama’s topic of conversation was completely appropriate. “I respect his honesty in doing that. I think that one of the things we need from our people who are running for office is not this pretense of perfection,” Giuliani said. “The reality is all of us that run for public office, whether its governor, legislator, mayor, president-we are all human beings. If we haven’t made mistakes don’t vote for us cause we got some big ones that are gonna happen in the future and we wont know how to handle them.” The former NYC mayor has been forthright about admitting his own mistakes during the campaign-most recently dogged by his connection to indicted former NYC Police Commissioner Bernie Kerik-even noting in two recent television ads that he is not perfect.
