Democrats Seek a More Popular War
(WASHINGTON) — After another Democrat attempt to pull U.S. troops from Iraq collapsed in the Senate late last week, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-CA, and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-NV, today announced a tactical shift designed to force President George Bush to end the war which polls show is unpopular with the American people.
“We call on President Bush to start a popular war,” the two Congressional leaders said in a joint news release. “The American people want a war they can feel good about again, like they do when they watch old movies about World War II.”
Sen. Reid and Rep. Pelosi said they would let the commander in chief decide whom to attack, as long as he asked Congress for a declaration of war, and ensured that the enemy met conditions they called “Recipe for a Popular War.”
The country the U.S. attacks, the Democrat leaders said, should be one that…
1) poses a major threat to world peace,
2) has a track record of aggressively exerting preemptive military power abroad,
3) is ruled by a religious zealot who makes decisions without regard to the will of the people,
4) has an essentially powerless legislature often overruled by the nation’s military commander,
5) demonstrably possesses, and has a history of detonating, nuclear weapons, and
6) has a vast global espionage network that even spies on its own people. The Democrat lawmakers said once the president declares war against such an enemy, Defense Department funds could be shifted from Iraq to the more popular war, and troops stationed in Iraq could be redeployed to the new battlefront. — as reported by satirist Scott Ott / ScrappleFace
It may be satire, true, but the way Reid and Pelosi seemed crazed about passing a bill to “end the war”, they seem to be more at war with the White House than they are with our foreign enemies. In fact the radical left, would have you believe we have no foreign enemies, except for our own government. Maybe Reid and Pelosi are believing their own spin.
The astute Speakers of the House and Senate seem so desperate to try and end the war, before our troops end it for them, that they are looking like morons in their attempt to grasp defeat out of the jaws of victory. It has to be amplifying the image of the Democratic party as the party that relishes defeat over victory in the minds of moderate voters. Instead of supporting the mission of the troops at a time when they are close to stabilizing the nation, they keep beating the same old drum. God forbid any Democrat should say, “Bravo Gen. Petraeus, your plans are working!!” The nation is watching in disgust at the partisan politics in D.C. has more than doubled since the Democrats have taken control of both houses. There may very well be a big surprise waiting for the Democrats on election day Nov. 2008 and not just on Pennsylvania Ave.
Regardless of who is in the White House (Democrat or Republican) the U.S. will likely be in Iraq for quite some time in a supporting role. (Much to the dismay of the radical left I might add. They can count on it if Hillary gets elected) The two Speakers might want to begin to consider a bill to also pull our troops out of Germany, Italy and Japan. After all… even though it’s a bit late, it will still feel like a cut and run political victory for their party.
The reduction in violence in Iraq, dare I say it, ironically appears to be a growing concern for Democrats who might loose their main political campaign issue if in fact stability increases further in Iraq. Expecting to get elected by just simply “Bashing Bush” and ending the “War”, when there is no war, might turn out to be a losing strategy…
