A refreshing and respected voice of reason from the Islamic community. Dr. Zuhdi Jasser, president of the American Islamic Forum for Democracy, in Phoenix Az., explained on “The Early Show” why he opposes the proposed Islamic Center be built two blocks from Ground Zero in NYC. Here is an excerpt from the show on CBS  on Sept 11, 2010:

A respected Muslim scholar has a message for those planning to build an Islamic center near Ground Zero in New York: It’s a bad idea, and a window on sharply differing thinking among Muslims worldwide on how to best go about promoting Islam – and peace.

Dr. Zuhdi Jasser, president of the American Islamic Forum for Democracy, in Phoenix, a former Muslim U.S. Navy Commander, wrote an op-ed in the Wall Street Journal Friday sharply critical of the planned Islamic center, urging organizer Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf and Muslims all over the world to show compassion and understand the American separation of church and state.

Jasser says the Islamic Center as conceived is more about making a political statement that will seriously divide communities than about bringing them together.

He wrote, “We Muslims should first separate mosque and state before lecturing Americans about church and state.” He continues, “American freedom of religion is a right, but … it is not right to make one’s religion a global political statement with a towering Islamic edifice that casts a shadow over the memorials of Ground Zero. … Islamists in ‘moderate’ disguise are still Islamists. In their own more subtle ways, the WTC mosque organizers end up serving the same aims (as) separatist and supremacist wings of political Islam.”

(2007-10-18) – The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) today filed suit against King Middle School in Portland, Maine, over a new policy to distribute birth control pills to 11-to-14 year-old girls without parental notification. “Like all Americans, the ACLU is shocked,” said an unnamed spokesman for the civil rights group. “Birth control pills have no place in our government-run, taxpayer-funded schools, because they’re only useful for girls engaged in heterosexual activity.

Distribution of the pill is inherently discriminatory, favoring one sex and one particular sexual preference.” An unnamed school spokesman said an out-of-court settlement may be in the works. “The ACLU has told us they would drop the suit,” the source said, “if each prescription of birth control pills included a label instructing students that heterosexual activity is just one of many options available to young teens and pre-teens, and directing them to visit the school library to investigate the full range of sexual opportunities.”
ACLU Sues Middle School Over Birth Control Pills — as reported by satirist Scott Ott

Maybe this is a satirical shot at the ACLU but one really does need to question the sanity of what is going on in the American educational system. When did government run, tax payer supported schools become the substitute for proper parenting? How far will this insanity go? This news story in the MSM is just one more example of an entitlement crazed, permissive mentality where irresponsible parents now expect that their parenting responsibilities be delegated to their local public schools.

There may be a good chance that the decision of that school board to permit the distribution of birth control to girls as young as age 11 may in fact make them an accessory to statutory rape in a future court case. The legal age of consent in Maine we believe is 14 years of age. An angry parent of a child under 14 may in fact have a good criminal case against the school district if contraceptives were dispensed without their consent. Not sure, but we are checking on it… — ZZ

It appears that Joe Torre has turned down a $5M deal to return in 2008. Could it have been due to George Steinbrenner’s emotional remarks before game 5?? Has Joe finally had enough?

In less that 15 minutes of a pre-mature story leaked from the Newark Star Ledger, a statement has been released that Joe Torre and the Yankee organization could not come to terms.

Joe Torre turned down a $5 million guaranteed contract from the New York Yankees today.
William Perlman/The Star-LedgerYankees Manager Joe Torre talks to the media at Yankee Stadium earlier this month.

After two days of closed-door meetings, the Yankees brass – including owner George Steinbrenner – unanimously decided to offer Torre a one-year, $5 million contract with the option of $3 million in bonuses, team officials said at an afternoon news conference on the manager’s fate.

The deal included a $1 million bonus if the Yankees made it to the division playoff series, a $1 million bonus if they made it to the division championship series and a $1 million bonus if they made it to the World Series. Torre made $7.5 million in 2007.

Team officials did not say why Torre rejected the offer but said they respected his decision. They said that they are moving forward with the search for a new manager.

“We appreciate everything he’s done … but it’s time to move forward,” team president Randy Levine said at the news conference.

The announcement followed Torre’s trip to Tampa this morning to discuss the possible deal. — Newark Star Ledger

It is likely that both players and fans will not take this well. George Steinbrenner’s remarks when the Yankees backs were up against the wall did not sit well with Mr. Torre. Not for his sake. he certainly has seen his share of glory over the years, but for the additional pressure placed on the younger players on the team that have come to love and respect the man. Johnny Damon was very open about the fact that all of the players felt the added pressure when the owner threatened their skipper’s job.

Look to see some fallout from this turn of events that might well prove to be too much for some of the more seasoned players who have looked to Joe Torre as a beacon of reason, sanity and inspiration. – ZZ

A brief explaination of the term “dhimmitude” courtesy of Dhimmi Watch…

Dhimmitude is the status that Islamic law, the Sharia, mandates for non-Muslims, primarily Jews and Christians. Dhimmis, “protected people,” are free to practice their religion in a Sharia regime, but are made subject to a number of humiliating regulations designed to enforce the Qur’an’s command that they “feel themselves subdued” (Sura 9:29). This denial of equality of rights and dignity remains part of the Sharia, and, as such, is part of the law that global jihadists are laboring to impose everywhere, ultimately on the entire human race. The dhimmi attitude of chastened subservience has entered into Western academic study of Islam, and from there into journalism, textbooks, and the popular discourse. One must not point out the depredations of jihad and dhimmitude; to do so would offend the multiculturalist ethos that prevails everywhere today.
